"I am pretty new to sewing and recently completed some freestyle classes and then the 8 week beginner course with Colleen and loved it all! The small class size (3 people max) is great and gives you time to ask questions along the way. Colleen will help you sew anything you like in the freestyle classes - I made a dress and skirt from a commercial pattern and Colleen showed me how to adjust/alter it according to my measurements, and again once I sewed some and could try it on. I wore the skirt yesterday and received some compliments, which was a nice feeling! Colleen is a great teacher, and genuinely a lovely person. I would recommend her classes!"

About your Instructor

Previously working as a nurse and midwife for 27 years Colleen was burned out and needed a change.

She quit her job and continued her studies in fashion design, landed a job in the fashion industry, and worked freelance as a sample maker and pattern maker.

She created her own fashion label 'Addison Ash' in 2015.

Recently, she realised how healing it had been to be creative, and felt that she could help others with their creativity.

“I started Freestyle Sewing and Pattern Making Tuition because after working close to people in a team for 27 years in the health industry, I discovered it to be quite lonely creating Addison Ash by myself, although I loved the freedom and creativity it involved.

I thought back to a time when I was stuck, unable to proceed with creative ventures as I wasn’t sure what to do next. I had an epiphany that I could help people to fulfil their creative dreams while still fulfilling mine by sharing the knowledge I had learned over the years.

I love working with people and helping to unleash their creativity.”

If you can’t make it to a class, you can come to a catch-up freestyle session at a convenient time within the 8 weeks, and I can teach you what you missed.

However, I do prefer to keep the course together if possible.

What do I need to bring?

Patterns

Bring along 2 commercial patterns to examine and learn from (one marked easy or very easy that you love and actually want to make, and one not marked easy or very easy).

I recommend selecting a pattern that can be made up in cotton, or a stable blended fabric – most of these are part cotton, try not to buy slippery fabrics at this stage as they’re more difficult to sew with. Slippery fabrics can be rayon, viscose, satin and any really fine flowy fabrics.

Fabric and notions

On the envelope of your pattern, you’ll find details of what you need to construct your garment from the pattern (under notions). If still in doubt consult the shop assistant, or we can discuss this in week 1, and you can bring the fabric before or on week 3.

I have 1 domestic sewing machine which has a lot of stitches, a reasonably advanced machine, 3 other basic entry level domestic machines, and two industrial machines. There are plenty of machines, as I only teach 4 people at one time.

If you prefer to learn on your own machine to learn how it works, feel free to bring it with you.I also have three overlockers, two domestic and one industrial which we can use and learn about.
